Barrier Lake

We went for lunch at Barrier Lake out in Kananaskis yesterday and I did a little scouting for a shoot. It was so beautiful even though it was only 17 degrees. Put me in the mood for fall. I think I will make it a knitwear story!

Sidewalk Citizen

I love the idea of things being delivered to me. Aviv makes and delivers bread to the downtown Calgary area, just get on the mailing list. If you don't have an office downtown (or a friend you can have it delivered to) you can pick up his bread and other amazing baked goods at various local foodie shops like Janice Beaton and the Cookbook Co. He also sells at the Hillhurst Farmer's Market on Wednesday afternoons. I am going to try to get there early today for one of his pies!

PS Did I mention the sandwiches too? SANDWICHES!

Karen Justl

I am often asked who did the amazing illustrated portrait of myself. Well, one day Karen Justl stole a picture of me and made such a cool thing out of it I have used it as my avatar ever since. She is a very talented and unique illustrator as can be seen on her blog. I have a hard time describing her work, as usually I have no idea what she is talking about, but for me, the images speak for themselves. Particularly this enthralling animation. She has published a book called "The Bird (cage)" and you can see her work in various magazine publications and in art installations around Toronto.

Here is the blurb from her blog...

"Karen Justl is an illustrator that is fascinated by the neuroscience of facial expression and emotion. She holds a Masters of Design from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto, Ontario. She is a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba where she received her BFA Honors in Painting at The University of Manitoba. She is an interdisciplinary artist researching caricature, facial expression, body language, illustration techniques and Freud's theories of the uncanny. Her illustrations have been published across Canada, including subTerrain, Herizons, Pilot Project and Crow's Toes."

She can be asked nicely to do one of you too! How great is that?

New Shots with Wilkosz & Way

So here are a couple of shots from the creative I did with Wilkosz & Way. April K was our model from Mode models and she looks stunning!  I was really impressed with how she's evolved. The shoes were courtesy of my friends at Gravity Pope and the clothes were a mix of menswear from Singer and Leo, and ladieswear from Holt's. Alicja Wilkosz did a lot of beautiful make-up changes as usual!

I really wanted to do some menswear for this shoot as styling more menswear has been my mandate this whole year and I haven't done nearly enough. However, she ended up looking a little "Working Girl" (the Melanie Griffith kind, not the hooker kind). Sometimes the first things you try are not the right things and I love that Marta and Jeff (W&W) give such great opportunities to actually be creative. Luckily I had brought my tape collection and was able to do a little trompe l'oeil on the clothes. The other shots from this shoot can be seen on my creatives blog

An Old Navy Peacoat

I used to have an peacoat of my grandpa's from his time in the Navy and after seeing this beautiful coat from Burberry Prorsum, I am wishing I still had it. The failings of youth! Maybe I will check out the surplus for one come fall.

Not to mention those boots!!

River of Light

We are lucky enough in Calgary to have the city producing a summer long art program about our beloved Bow river. I am especially excited for the project called "River of LIght", by London based Creatmosphere, in which 500 illuminated spheres will be released at various points along the Bow on August 21st. The Louise Riley bridge (on 10th st NW) and the trees along the river will be lit also, and when I say lit it is more than just lights, they are colored as well and make for a surreal and fantastic landscape. You can participate by making your own sphere and releasing it or by volunteering. Here are a few shots from various other installations by artist Laurent Louyer and Creatmosphere.

From the city's website

August 14 - 21
For seven nights, three-foot, illuminated floating spheres will be located along the Bow River. These lit spheres will be colour programmed to highlight glacier melt, streams and rainfall that sustain the Bow River.  On the eve of  August 21, a total of 500 inflated, illuminated spheres will be launched from various sites along the river.

Flintstones

I don't usually reblog stuff but this guy is a genius. He found, and made ready for you to download, the background music from the Flintstones! So great! I watched that show religiously my whole childhood at lunchtime and it is a huge part of my frame of reference. I am just trying to figure out how to make one into a ringtone.

Ponytail

I have been growing out my trademark bob since January because I miss my ponytail! I am glad I started when I did because it should be ready for this Louis Vuitton look for fall. Now my only question is; bangs?

Cabin/Cottage

In the east they call it a cottage but in the west we have cabins. Usually in the woods or on a lake. Mine is both and I tell you, I wish I was there now!
